THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

With the countdown to the OSHL’s Tourney IV clicking down to just 8 more sleeps…the chatter amongst this season’s 12 GMs has already reached a fever-pitch.

This year’s GM pool consists of three rookies (Brandon Forbes, Jeff Reinprecht and Jimmy Ward), two second-time GMs (Blake Romain and Joe Hilborn), two third-time GMs (Paul Gach and Trevor Ellsworth), three GMs in their fourth stint (Laine Larson, Rick Kelly and Andrew Ginther), one fifth-time GM (Richard Demery), and one who’s been there every season from the beginning…six-time GM, Marcio Mendes.

The five completed seasons/tourneys have produced 5 different Legacy Cup Champion teams…GM’d by 5 different GMs.

SEASON I – Laine Larson –BRUINS (over Marcio Mendes – RED WINGS)

SEASON II – Richard Demery – CANADIENS (over Laine Larson – BRUINS)

TOURNEY I – Greg Rayburn – TEAM RUSSIA (over Marcio Mendes – SWEDEN)

TOURNEY II – Paul Gach – TEAM FINLAND (over Greg Rayburn – RUSSIA)

TOURNEY III – Blake Romain – TEAM CANADA (over Marcio Mendes – SWEDEN)

With four of the five winning GM’s, and five of the six GM’s to ever qualify for the LEGACY CUP FINALS all back and at the helm of one of this tournament’s twelve teams…no matter who wins...it will be a first.  Either we will see a first time winner…or we will have to suffer through the unbearable chest-thumpiing of the first two-time winning GM in OSHL history.  One needs to look no further than our most recent two-time champion…and last tourney’s 1st Overall selection in the OSHL Draft…Jesse Stahn…for a taste of what we may have to endure (heaven help us if he wins a third…).

The ever-humble and reigning champion, Blake Romain, predicted early…and often…that he will be retaining his title.  He has explained to the rest of the GMs…on a daily basis…that he anticipates not even needing to step on the floor until the playoff rounds, as the team he assembles will cruise effortlessly through the round robin.  He has gone so far as to eliminate 10% of his own body…just to try and level the playing field.

Finnish GM, Paul Gach, continues to do his best Kevin Lowe impersonation…yammering on about knowing a little something about winning…and that his plan all along was to not waste energy actually winning games in the round robin but rather just to tie his way into the playoffs…and no…he did not just catch a ride on Jesse’s shoulders to the finals.

Things are definitely heating up…the GMs received the official third-party player rankings Thursday afternoon…and while I am not authorized to release the details to the public…I will say this…last year’s first overall pick and two-time champion does not head the list.

GERMANY'S NEW DICTATOR

The revolving door of GM's in Germany continues, as Jimmy Ward takes his turn at the helm.  The announcement has left the country stunned, disappointed, and downright dismayed. Long has Ward claimed to have untapped expert knowledge of the world of ball hockey.  Now the time has come for him to put his money where his mouth is.  For those souls who are unfortunate enough to find themselves drafted into the German ranks...God be with you.

TWO MORE COUNTRIES ACCEPTED INTO OSHL'S TOURNEY IV!!

The bid of Team Iceland and Team Slovenia have been accepted at the 12th hour!  The addition of these two hockey powers has now increased the tournament to the size of 12 teams.  As a result, the teams will now be split into 3 pools of 4.  All round robin games will be played within the pool, with the top two seeds automatically qualifying for the post-season rounds.  An additional two wildcard teams will be added, based on record, to bring the total to 8 playoff teams.

TOURNEY IV MOVES TO A NEW VENUE!!

With the OSHL's regular venue (WECA) booked up for every day except Valentine's...the OSHL made the necessary, relationship-saving, move to the Sportsdome for it's fourth tournament.

The move brings with it some changes.  Obviously the biggest being a concrete floor and bigger rinks.  The tournament will operate on one floor, with that floor being divided into two smaller rinks.  Teams will have access to four of the 'Dome's locker rooms.  As well as the added benefit of having Spike's all day.

The venue change has brought with it a change in cost, and so fees have had to be bumped up to $60.  Spots are given to the first 60 players and 10 goalies who pay the registration fee.  Money can be paid via email transfer to oshl@hotmail.ca

Once again, the tourney will consist of a pre-tourament draft at Spike's (date to be determined) where the 10 gm's will fill out their remaining 6 roster spots.  Each team is guaranteed 3 round robin games, with the top 8 teams qualifying for the single-game-elimination style playoffs.  Games will be 3-on-3, with two 15-minute runtime halves.  Any questions or concerns can be directed to Jimmy Ward or Andrew Ginther at oshl@hotmail.ca
